Leaping 62 places in the 2018 QS World University Rankings, Deakin is now placed in the world’s top 300 universities by every major university ranking.
The release of the QS World University rankings today has placed Deakin University at number 293. This jump of 62 places from 2017 positions Deakin in the top 1.1 per cent of universities in the world.
The ranking cements Deakin’s position within the top two per cent of universities in each of the three major global rankings, which also include the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by ShanghaiRankings and the “Times Higher Education” (THE) ranking system.
Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander congratulated the Deakin community on the achievement.

[/testimonial_picture]The QS World University Rankings are released annually and are based on six performance indicators that assess university performance across four areas: research, teaching, employability and internationalisation. The six key indicators are: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, student to faculty ratio, international faculty, and international students.
Professor den Hollander noted that Deakin was particularly successful in the areas of Academic Reputation (257 in the world), Employer Reputation (244), International Faculty (105) and International Students (243). Deakin also made strong rankings gains in QS’s academic survey and its assessment of research output (gaining 18 places).
The QS ranking comes two months after Deakin recorded its best ever result in the THE Young Universities Rankings, coming in at 43rd in the world and as the highest placed Victorian university for the third year in the row. The THE ranking was for universities under 50 years old, with Deakin now sitting at number eight of 23 Australian universities included.
Today’s release is the latest in a long trend of successful gains for Deakin in international university rankings. Last year, Deakin’s rankings performance placed it for the first time in the top two per cent of universities worldwide. And earlier this year saw the University experience excellent results in the 2017 QS Subject rankings: 24th in the world for Nursing, 28th for Education, and in the top one per cent for Accounting and Finance, Anthropology, Business and Management Studies, Communication and Media, Law, Philosophy, and Sociology.
Deakin was also recently ranked number one in the world for Sports Science by the highly regarded ShanghaiRankings.
