Deakin innovation on display at Airshow

One-of-a-kind drones, futuristic car parts and cutting-edge software are all part of the experience awaiting visitors to Deakin’s stand at the Australian International Airshow 2017.

Deakin University will showcase the results of innovative research at the Airshow this year, with projects from the Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation, Institute for Frontier Materials, the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment, Deakin Software and Technology Innovation Laboratory and industry partners demonstrating the University’s expertise in aerospace and related fields.

Visitors to the stand can immerse themselves in a virtual reality tour of Deakin’s Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training, view the latest in carbon fibre car parts and witness carbon fibre composite 3D printing in action.

“Almost 90 per cent of Deakin research is rated world-class and above, with ten key disciplines well above world standard, including materials engineering,” said Deakin’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Peter Hodgson.

“The Airshow is a unique opportunity to showcase our research in materials and engineering, software design and energy solutions and our collaborative activities with partners from a range of industries.”

With interactive displays and more than 30 Deakin staff and researchers on hand to share their knowledge and enthusiasm, visitors can meet with the experts behind a number of projects and explore how ideas become reality.

Future students will also have an opportunity to see how studying at Deakin can lead to an exciting career in research, and gather information about what Deakin has to offer in science, engineering and other disciplines.

To be held at Avalon Airport, from Tuesday 28 February to 5 March, this year’s event will feature “Air Power in Action,” with the latest in military aircraft, aerobatic displays and modern, historic and classic aircraft on show.

Trade days for the event are from Tuesday 28 February until 2pm on Friday 3 March.
